Temperment Testing
There several things you need to think of before going to do a temperament test
for your SD. This is a very important transaction for you. Most people would
not buy a car alone but would take a friend along for a second opinion. This dog
is as huge an investment as a car and will be around a lot longer. So, never go
by yourself. Take along an interested unbiased person -- not someone (usually a
family member) who has an emotional stake in the dog. You want a supportive friend.
If you are severely physically disabled, do take someone with you who is not. You
will want their help with some of the exercises. If you have never tested a dog
before, you may want your friend to be dog knowledgeable.
VERY IMPORTANT:
Trust your own feelings and instincts.
-
You are the one going to depend on this dog, living with him for years.
You MUST be comfortable with him.
- If you are unsure or uneasy, don't continue the test.
- If you feel in any way wrong about an adult dog, don't continue
- If you are in any way unsure of the dog, don't get it.
- Don't allow pressure to take the dog no matter what anyone else says.
In all tests, you and/or your friend must conduct the testing. If you know the litter
of puppies, then get a friend who has never seen them to do the test. A stranger to
the dog/puppies must do the tests. This is the only way to evaluate the true reactions.
For adult dogs, the best advice is to only test dogs who have been recommended
by someone else’s evaluation. Proceed with caution and if the dog makes no
attempt to be friendly, is agitated, or has a stiff stance, refuse the evaluation.
Do not test a female dog in heat. End the test if there is any sign of aggression
from the dog.
Actually, the best thing you could do is practice the testing on other dogs such
as those of your friends or family. Then you will have an idea of how to handle
the tools during the real test and some of the results to expect.
